About Phil Packer
Boxer Michael Watson did it in 2003. Now, Major Phil Packer will reinstate the faith humanity has in the strength of the spirit…in the overwhelming nature of steel-will. As he took the first few painful steps on April 26th as part of his contribution for ‘Help for Heroes’ (a charity trust raising funds for wounded servicemen and women), specks of people slowly blended in with the horizon and faded away. For Phil, the walk to the finishing line of the 26.2-mile Flora London Marathon will take over two weeks, every stride taking him closer to his goal of £1 million. It wouldn’t be just a test of mental strength and resilience; each step will be a battle fought by his brain to get his spine to respond.
On his crutches, Phil will have to overcome the urge to give in and retire to his rehabilitation centre…to abandon a decision to fight half way through, like most of us do…and to put self above the cause. As he fights a personal battle against injury and physical pain, and other adversities, let us lend our support and egg him on. Let us show our appreciation for his courage by spreading the word around. It is a hero’s fight for other heroes and let us all stand up for it!
